Born and raised in Algeria during the Dark Decade, in the middle of gunshots, fear, riffles, blood, fratricide…I am part of what we call here the “Real” Generation, the 80s and 90s generation. Millennials, Gen Y of Algeria.
 
The generation that missed its childhood or adolescence, that lived the “terrorism era” but did not understand it (or at least not fully), that has all those horrors engraved on them, a collective memory still twitching with clear or obscure images left behind… The generation that has the Algerian identity forged on it by a bloody and dark chapter of history…
 
I have two young siblings born in 2002, twins, a boy and a girl, part of another generation, a new one. Born in the peace era, the Bouteflika presidency chapter, their generation is different from mine. Zoomers, Gen Z of Algeria, I like to call them “Boutefteens.” 
 
Utterly disconnected from politics, uninvolved in decision-making, Boutefteens lived their whole life under the same regime until 2019, when a will of change exploded and Algeria’s youth raised their voices as one for change.
 
The streets invaded every Friday with millions of youths, the anger and screams, held for years, exploding in a colorful revolution, a new chapter in our history started.
 
A whole history chapter, a controversial career, ended by the voice of youth.
 
For “Boutefteens”, an entire life in peace, was ironically just a president’s career.
ولدت وترعرعت في الجزائر خلال العشرية السوداء، وسط رصاص مدوٍ، خوف مصيري، بنادق ورشاشات، دم جزائري واغتيال أخوي ... أنا جزء مما نسميه هنا الجيل "الحقيقي"، جيل الثمانينيات والتسعينيات. جيل الألفية الخاص بالجزائر.

الجيل الذي فاتته سنوات طفولته أو مراهقته، الذي عاش نكسة ونكبة "الإرهاب" ولكنه لم يفهمها، (أو على الأقل لم يفهمها بالكامل)، الذي حُفرت ونقشت فيه كل تلك الفظائع، الذي كويت ذاكرته الجماعية بكلمات غير مذكورة وصور تتأرجح بين ظل وظلام... الجيل الذي طبعت عليه الهوية الجزائرية بفصل دموي وقاتم من تاريخنا المعاصر ...

لديّ شقيقان صغيران وُلدا في عام 2002، توأمان، ولد وفتاة، جزء من جيل آخر، جيل جديد.

جيل ولد في عهد السلام والاستقرار، عاش فصل قيادة الرئيس الراحل "عبد العزيز بوتفليقة"، جيل مختلف تماما عن جيلي. جيل "الزووم"، جيل "زد" الجزائري، أحب أن أسميهم " البوتفتينز".

كمجموعة منفصلة تماماً عن السياسة، غير معنية بصنع القرار، عاش البوتفتينز حياتهم كلها في ظل نفس النظام حتى عام 2019، عندما انفجرت إرادة تبديل شاملة ورفع الشباب الجزائري صوته، موحداً، من أجل التغيير.

امتلأت الشوارع كل يوم جمعة بملايين الشباب، وارتفع هتاف الغضب، ضجة الصراخ، وصوت الأمل المكبوت والمكبوح منذ سنوات، متفجراً في ثورة ملونة. بدأ فصل جديد في تاريخنا، اختتمت حقبة تاريخية كاملة وانتهت حياة مهنية مثيرة للجدل بصوت الشباب.

للمفارقة، بالنسبة للبوتفتينز كانت حياة السلام التي عاشوها مجرد فترة وظيفة رئيس.

أعتقد أن الكيان الجزائري يتجاوز معايير الجنسية والهوية والثقافة.
 
بالنسبة لي، كوني جزائرياً يتعدى كل الأسباب والنتائج نحو التجريد المحض للمعنى اللغوي للمفهوم.
 
أحب أن أقول إنه هذيان.

Born in 1993 in Algeria, Ahmed Merzagui has always been interested in art and culture. Starting with writing at an early age, he later moved to theater, dance, music, and finally photography. Also a medical professional, Ahmed explores social, psychological, personal and political subjects. He looks at the world as a scene in constant change, that we must, as humans, for existential purpose, among others, postpone, describe or tell, to our similar, giving our, probably subjective and specific, but still unique and interesting, vision of this painting shimmering infinite facets.
