Five years ago, I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
 
The National Institute of Mental Health NIMH says that it's "an illness marked by an ongoing pattern of varying moods, self-image, and behavior. These symptoms often result in impulsive actions and problems in relationships. People with borderline personality disorder may experience intense episodes of anger, depression, and anxiety that can last from a few hours to days." The most effective way to treat it is the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) which is described by NIMH as "a type of therapy that uses concepts of mindfulness and acceptance or being aware of and attentive to the current situation and emotional state. That starts with knowing the symptoms and the feelings that came with it so you can recognize it later.”
 
People don't notice I struggle with mental illness and when I tell them they're always surprised. I've developed some good defense mechanisms over the years which help me mask it.
 
I started this project to try to understand more about my diagnosis and attempt to express the feelings attached to it as the first step of the DBT.
 
But the project turned into a conversation and that conversation became a safe circle for me and others like me. We realized we are not as alone in this as we thought we were, and that helped.

قبل خمس سنوات، تم تشخيصي باضطراب الشخصية الحدية.
 
يقول المعهد الوطني للصحة العقلية إنه "مرض يتّسم بتباينات مستمرة في الحالة المزاجية والصورة الذاتية والسلوك. وغالباً ما تؤدي هذه الأعراض إلى تصرفات اندفاعية ومشاكل في العلاقات. قد يعاني الأشخاص الذين يعانون من اضطراب الشخصية الحدية من نوبات شديدة من الغضب والاكتئاب والقلق التي يمكن أن تستمر من بضع ساعات إلى أيام." أمّا الطريقة الأكثر فعالية لعلاج هذا الاضطراب فهي العلاج السلوكي الجدلي الذي وصفه المعهد الوطني للصحة العقلية بأنه "نوع من العلاج يستخدِم مفاهيم التيقّظ والتقبّل أو إدراك الوضع الحالي والحالة العاطفية والتنبّه لهما". ويبدأ ذلك بتحديد الأعراض والمشاعر المصاحبة لها من أجل التعرّف عليها لاحقاً.
 
لا يلاحظ الناس أنني أعاني من اضطراب نفسي، ودائماً ما يتفاجؤون عندما أخبرهم بذلك. فقد طوّرتُ بعض آليات الدفاع الجيدة على مر السنوات وقد ساعدتني في إخفائه.
 
لقد بدأتُ هذا المشروع كمحاولة لفهم تشخيصي بشكل أفضل وللتعبير عن المشاعر المرتبطة به كخطوة أولى في العلاج السلوكي المعرفي.
 
لكن المشروع تحوّل إلى محادثة، وأصبحت تلك المحادثة دائرة آمنة لي ولآخرين مثلي. لقد أدركنا أننا لسنا وحدنا في هذا الشأن كما كنا نعتقد، وقد ساعدنا ذلك.

In 2021, after graduating with a Computer Science degree from Alexandria University, she decided to turn photography into her principal career. Her first multimedia project “But you won’t notice” was funded by AFAC, Prince Claus Fund and Magnum Foundation, and the short creative documentary was made in the frame of the creative documentary workshop organized by the Between Women Filmmakers Caravan.
 
From conceptual portraits to street and documentary photography, Menna's work explores different mediums to conceptualize and capture intangible elements of humankind, such as unfolded fears, dreams and feelings.
