Memories of my early childhood center around playing outdoors. When I became a mother, I wanted my child to have a similar experience in Beirut, so I began taking my son on walks, searching for friendly grass patches and wooded pockets. Instead, we found more than I anticipated: hidden courtyards and street shepherds, vertical gardens and urban hunters.
The city is in a constant push and pull with the natural world: some neighborhoods exterminate it, others welcome it but domesticate it. No matter the extent of human activity, the wilderness is always rushing back in to claim its place amongst us.
Woven through the series are signs of the current Lebanese financial and economic crisis: stalled construction sites and abandoned lots, stolen manhole covers, empty political slogans and disorganized state offices, poultry and livestock that have been brought into the city due to the fuel and electricity deficit, urban gardening initiatives spurred on by inflation or the lockdown during the Covid pandemic.
ذكريات طفولتي المبكرة تتركز حول اللعب في الهواء الطلق. عندما أصبحت أماً، أردت أن يعيش طفلي تجربة مماثلة في بيروت، لذلك بدأت أصطحبه في نزهات بحثاً عن مناطق عشبية لطيفة وأجمات أشجار. بدلاً من ذلك، وجدنا أكثر مما توقعت: باحات مخفيّة ورعاة يسيرون في الشوارع وحدائق عمودية وأشخاص يصطادون الطيور في المدينة.
المدينة في حالة شد وجذب مستمرة مع الطبيعة: أحياء تُبيدها، وأخرى ترحّب بها مع حرصها على تدجينها. بغض النظر عن مدى النشاط ال إنساني، فإن البرية دائماً ما تندفع مرة أخرى للمطالبة بمكانها بيننا.
المشاهد الناجمة عن الأزمة المالية والاقتصادية اللبنانية الحالية تظهر مُتراصة: مواقع بناء متوقفة وأراضي بناء مهجورة، وأغطية بالوعات مسروقة، وشعارات سياسية جوفاء، ومؤسسات حكومية غير منظمة، ودواجن وماشية تم جلبها إلى المدينة بسبب نقص الوقود والكهرباء، ومبادرات البستنة الحضرية مدفوعة بالتضخم أو بسبب الإغلاق أثناء جائحة كوفيد-19.
Ieva Saudargaite Douaihi is a photographer and visual artist who grew up between Lithuania, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon, where she has been based since 2007. Ieva studied architecture at the Lebanese American University and École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris. In 2021, she co-founded Digital Fountain, a platform for photography and is currently a member of the Lebanese photography collective Collectif 1200.
Informed by her background in architecture, her artistic practice spans across different media and is often about the built or natural environment.
Her works have been exhibited in Case Arabe Madrid, “Les Femmes S’exposent”, Institut du Monde Arabe, the Lebanese Pavilion at the Venice Architectural Biennial 2018, Sursock Museum and the Beirut Art Center.
